50th Anniversary Celebration

ISGC Choral Music Workshop and ‘Peoples’ Concert September 23 – 24, 2022

The I. Sherman Green Chorale, founded in 1972, is a Norfolk-based semi-professional organization that has presented a scope of choral music selections ranging from classical to gospel for decades. With the slogan, “Enlighten! Energize! Inspire!” as its theme, the Chorale’s mission is to promote I. Sherman Greene’s legacy of musical excellence through choral performances of time-tested and contemporary music. This Fall, the Chorale will present its annual Peoples Concert in September and its Christmas Concert in December in person for the first time in two years.

Continuing with the Chorale’s 50th Anniversary celebration, we want to “pay it forward” by offering the inaugural Choral Music Workshop as a choral singing learning lab. Participants will be undergraduate and high school students and community singers selected by their music instructors.

directors. Held at the Kempsville Presbyterian Church (KPC) Friday evening and during the day Saturday, September 23 & 24, 2022, workshop participants will perform during the Peoples Concert later that evening. As a bonus, our guest choir will be the North Carolina A&T State University Choir under the direction of Travis Alexander. All in all, an evening that promises to be a concert that will “Enlighten! Energize! & Inspire!” everyone engaged in this experience.

We are pleased that our first annual Chorale Music Workshop features a former member of the I. Sherman Greene Chorale. Noted choral conductor, composer, and arranger Dr. Marques Garrett is Assistant Professor of Music in Choral Activities at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln’s Glenn Korff School of Music. An active conductor, Dr. Garrett serves as a guest conductor or clinician with school, church, community, and festival/honor choirs throughout the country. In addition to teaching and conducting classes at UNL, he leads conducting workshops at other universities and conferences.

This year’s Choral Music Workshop is a win-win opportunity for both the I. Sherman Greene Choral and the Hampton Roads Arts Community. We hope to make this an annual event to enrich and expose developing voices in Hampton Roads to other choral music students and acclaimed music educators. The Chorale’s goal is to continue the “Black Song” tradition in all its forms and foundations as we recruit future voices to ISGC and other regional choral opportunities. It is one way to give back to the Arts Community in Hampton Roads, which has generously supported us for over five decades throughout the pandemic.

Please join us as we celebrate 50 years of The I. Sherman Greene Chorale at the Peoples Concert Saturday, featuring the workshop and our guest choir from NC A&T’s Choir on September 24th, 2022, starting promptly at 7:15 pm.

All donations collected at this Peoples Concert, traditionally a free concert, will offset NC A&T’s choir expenses and begin a stipend/scholarship fund for young singers.

The 50th Anniversary Choral Music Workshop will be held at Kempsville Presbyterian Church (KPC) Friday, September 23, from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm and Saturday, September 24, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm; it includes continental breakfast and box lunch.
